What is ADAS & Why Recalibration Matters

It’s the technology in modern vehicles that helps prevent accidents.

Most cars built after 2018 have forward-facing cameras above the windshield. They monitor the road and tell your vehicle whether it’s drifting out of its lane, if there’s a car ahead, if a pedestrian stepped into traffic. When your windshield is replaced or your vehicle is in a collision, those cameras get misaligned.

That’s where ADAS calibration comes in. We use specialized equipment to retarget those cameras so they read the road accurately again. It’s a critical safety step that many repair shops skip.

Does My Vehicle Need ADAS Calibration?

If your car was made in 2018 or later, there’s a good chance it has ADAS. Most vehicles do now. Some vehicles have multiple cameras (front, sides, even the rear). All of them may need recalibration depending on what was impacted.

We can tell you instantly whether your vehicle needs it. When we arrive for your windshield replacement, we check for forward-facing cameras. If they’re there, we recommend calibration. Most of the time, your insurance covers it as part of the glass claim. If not, we’ll give you a free quote.

Insurance Coverage & Warranty

If your windshield is covered by your insurance policy (called comprehensive or full glass coverage), ADAS calibration is almost always included. Your insurance approves it as part of the same claim. When glass is replaced, the camera is disturbed. Recalibrating it is not optional.

Here’s what you should know about ADAS recalibration

  • Full glass coverage includes ADAS. If you have zero-deductible glass coverage, ADAS calibration comes with it. No extra charge.
  • Out-of-pocket jobs: If you’re paying out of pocket, we’ll quote you on the full job, glass and calibration together. The cost varies by vehicle.
  • Warranty: We warranty all work. If your cameras aren’t reading correctly after calibration, we’ll revisit it at no extra charge.

Call us first. We’ll check your coverage and let you know exactly what your insurance will pay for.

Our ADAS Recalibration Process

We bring everything we need to your location. No appointment lost to a shop visit. We come to your home, your work, or wherever you’re parked.

1

Inspect & Diagnose

First, we locate all forward-facing cameras on your vehicle and identify which ones need calibration based on the type of repair you had done.

2

Set Up Equipment

Next, we deploy a specialized calibration rig, a targeting screen that sits in front of your vehicle. This tool reads where your cameras are actually pointing versus where they should point.

3

Run Calibration

We use this data to adjust the camera angles back into spec. It’s precise work. Millimeters matter.

4

Verify & Document

Once calibration is complete, we scan your vehicle with a diagnostic tool to confirm all ADAS functions are active and reading correctly. We provide you with a calibration report. Your insurance gets the same documentation for their records. The repair is complete.

ADAS Calibration FAQs

If your vehicle has a forward-facing camera (most 2018 and newer vehicles do), yes. The camera was disturbed when we removed the old windshield, and federal safety standards require it to be re-aimed. Skipping calibration means lane-departure warnings, automatic emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control may not work correctly.
Static calibration uses a targeted screen positioned in front of the vehicle in a controlled environment. Dynamic calibration involves driving the vehicle on the road for a set distance to let the system self-calibrate. Some vehicles need one, some need both. We follow each manufacturer’s required procedure for your specific vehicle.
Almost always yes if you have Comprehensive coverage. Most carriers treat calibration as a required part of the windshield claim because the camera was disturbed during the replacement. We submit calibration on the same claim form. More on insurance →
30 to 60 minutes on top of the windshield replacement, depending on how many cameras need recalibrating and whether your vehicle requires static, dynamic, or both procedures. We will give you the full timeline when we book.
Yes. We bring everything we need to your location, including the targeting equipment for static calibration. The ideal spot is a level driveway or parking lot with about 30 feet of clear space in front of the vehicle. We will assess on arrival.
