If you commute US-50 into Sacramento from El Dorado Hills, you have probably collected a rock chip or two this year. You are not imagining it and you are not unlucky. The Fix50 work has kept loose aggregate on that corridor for months, and the stretch between the El Dorado County line and Sunrise Blvd is where most of our calls come from.

Here is what actually matters once it happens.

Why a highway chip is worse than a parking lot chip

Speed changes the damage. A pebble kicked up at 20 miles an hour leaves a surface mark. The same pebble at 70 drives a cone-shaped fracture down into the glass, and often into the inner layer of the laminate.

That is why a chip from US-50 frequently looks small from the driver’s seat and turns out to be deeper than expected. The visible dot is the top of the cone, not the whole thing.

The first 24 hours decide whether it is a $75 fix

A fresh chip is clean. Once dirt, water and road grime work into the fracture, the resin cannot bond to the glass properly, and a repair that could have been invisible ends up cloudy or fails outright.

Three things help in the meantime. Put a piece of clear tape over it to keep debris out. Keep the car out of direct sun if you can. And go easy on the temperature swings, which means not blasting the AC straight at a windshield that has been baking in a parking lot all afternoon.

That last one is the big one around here. Foothill summers regularly clear 100 degrees, and the temperature difference across the glass when cold air hits hot glass is exactly what turns a chip into a crack. We see it constantly in July and August.

Repair or replace

The rough rule: smaller than a quarter, not in your direct line of sight, and not at the very edge of the glass means it can usually be repaired. Chip repair is $75 and takes about half an hour.

Edge chips are the exception people get wrong. Damage within a couple of inches of the perimeter tends to run, because that is where the glass carries the most stress. Those often need replacement even when they look minor.

If the crack is already in front of the driver, we will usually recommend replacement regardless of size. A repair leaves slight distortion, and distortion in your primary sightline is not worth saving money on.

Your insurance almost certainly covers this

Most comprehensive policies cover chip repair at zero out of pocket, because insurers would much rather pay $75 now than $600 for a replacement in September.

And filing does not raise your rates. California’s Prop 103 prevents insurers from surcharging a comprehensive glass claim. The number of people who pay cash to avoid a rate increase that legally cannot happen is genuinely high.

We verify your coverage before we start and file the claim ourselves.

Collecting several chips at once

If you drive that corridor daily you may have picked up more than one. We can do multiple repairs in a single visit, which is cheaper and faster than handling them one at a time as each one gets noticed.

Worth walking around the car in good light before you book. Chips low on the passenger side are easy to miss for weeks.

Getting it done without losing a morning

We are mobile only and based in El Dorado Hills, so this is our home stretch of road. We come to your driveway in Serrano or your office lot down the hill, and you keep working through the appointment.

A chip repair is done in about 30 minutes. There is no reason to take a morning off for this.

Frequently Asked Questions

How fast do I need to fix a rock chip from Highway 50?

Sooner is meaningfully better. A fresh chip is clean and repairs almost invisibly. After a week of dirt and water working into it, and after a few 100 degree afternoons, the odds of a clean repair drop and the odds of it running into a crack go up.

Does a chip repair cost anything if I have comprehensive coverage?

Usually nothing. Most comprehensive policies waive the deductible on chip repair because it saves the insurer from paying for a full replacement later. We check your policy before we start.

Will filing a glass claim raise my insurance in California?

No. Prop 103 prevents insurers from raising your premium over a comprehensive glass claim. This is the most common reason people pay cash unnecessarily.

Can you repair more than one chip in the same visit?

Yes, and it is the cheaper way to handle it. If you commute US-50 regularly you may have several. Check the glass in good light before you book so we bring what we need.

What if the chip is right at the edge of the windshield?

Edge damage usually needs a full replacement. The perimeter of the glass carries the most stress, so chips there tend to run even when they look small.

Got a chip from the commute?

Call or text and we will come to you in El Dorado Hills, Folsom, Cameron Park or anywhere in the Sacramento area. Chip repair is $75, takes about 30 minutes, and most insurance covers it at no cost to you.
